Leveling the playing field

The holiday season is a time to look back on the past year and give thanks; this past year was a tremendous year of change and opportunity.

At Quinn Thomas, we pride ourselves in being communicators who work on issues that directly affect communities across the Pacific Northwest. Whether it is healthcare, education or rural economic development, we work to raise the specter and awareness of how we can better collaborate on issues that affect our daily lives.

There is no bigger issue at hand than ensuring that all families have equal opportunities to succeed. Through that lens, childhood literacy is a paramount issue of our day.

That is why IMG_1468we are proud that we ended our year celebrating with our clients and hosting our second annual book drive for the Children’s Book Bank at our holiday party.

For children in poverty, one of the biggest obstacles to literacy development is the scarcity of books at home. A recent study shows that the ratio of books to children in low-income neighborhoods, is just one book for every 300 children compared to 13 books per child in middle- and upper-income neighborhoods.

This can have a direct and long-term impact on the educational success of these students. The Children’s Book Bank reports that low-income students “enter first grade with an average of only 25 hours of one-to-one picture book reading, compared with 1,000 to 1,700 hours for a child from a typical middle-class home.”

Books can be that bridge. A simple donation of books can help make that cataclysmic shift towards equity.

During our annual holiday party, Quinn Thomas spread the word about the need for books for low-income children in Portland. We sponsored a book drive with all donations going to the Children’s Book Bank.

Since 2008, the Children’s Book Bank has collected books to donate to children in the Portland community. They have organized over 6,500 community volunteers to channel over 475,000 books into the hands and homes of over 35,000 children in need in the Portland area.

We appreciate the support of our holiday party guests. With their donations, we were able to deliver over 100 books to the Children’s Book Bank in support of their mission to put more books in the hands of Portland area children.

Thank you to everyone who supported our holiday book drive. Your donations will make a difference in the life of a child.
